Active substance: Liraglutide
Victoza pen is a remedy for people 10 years of age and higher with type two diabetes mellitus. It is designed for those with a diet and exercise to improve blood sugar levels, as well as glycemic control. It also helps to reduce the risk of major cardiovascular complications (it includes cardiovascular death, nonfatal myocardial infarction, and stroke).
I ml of Victoza includes 6ml of liraglutide. The remedy may include excipients: sodium hydrogen phosphate dihydrate, propylene glycol, phenol, sodium hydroxide / hydrochloric acid (for pH correction), water for injection.

Limitations
Victoza liraglutide cannot be used by the patients with the following issues:
- Type 1 diabetes mellitus;
- Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2);
- Diabetic ketoacidosis;
- Acute kidney injury;
- Heart failure III and IV functional class according to NYHA classification;
- Hypersensitivity or allergic reactions to any of the components of the drug.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding.
In studies with rats and mice, Victoza and medicines that work like Victoza caused thyroid tumors, including thyroid cancer. It’s not clear whether it can cause it in people.
Dosing and Administration for Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
Doctors can prescribe doses of 0.6 mg, 1.2 mg, and 1.8 mg of Victoza liraglutide injection. A starting dose for adults with type 2 diabetes is 0.6 mg. After using the remedy for at least a week, the doctor may increase the quantity. The maximum amount of the medication per day – 1.8 mg.
Use Victoza on the abdomen, thigh, upper arm, or shoulder subcutaneously. Do not inject the drug in the pen into the vein or muscle. It can’t be used by two different people even if the needles were changed.
Victoza pen is usually prescribed in addition to existing metformin therapy or combination therapy with metformin and thiazolidinedione. In most cases, recalculation of metformin and thiazolidinedione is not required. However, the doctor may tell you to lower the dose of sulfonylurea or insulin.
Side Effects
Victoza pen may cause the following side effects:
- Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia);
- Headache;
- Lost of the appetite;
- Nausea;
- Diarrhea/constipation;
- Slight allergic reaction on the injection site (rash, redness).
If those symptoms are not gone within a few days or become worse, patients need to stop using Victoza and contact the specialist to get a consultation and further instructions.
Storage and Handling Conditions
All Victoza medicines should be stored in the refrigerator at a temperature from 2°C to 8°C. The drug should not be frozen or held close to the freezer compartment.
If the pen is currently in use or is about to be used, keep it at a room temperature below 30°C, or in the fridge (2°C-8°C). Put it in the dark, dry place, away from the direct sunlight and children. Liraglutide Victoza should be discarded after the 30 days since the first use, even if there is still remedy left in the pen. Do not use it after the expiration date indicated on the package.
